Goma Tei (Victoria Ward location)

Now, you all know I'm a ramen-lover. I could eat ramen all day, every day. My favorites include Tenkaippin, Ton Ton Ramen, Rai Rai Ramen, and of course, Yotteko-Ya.

Today, though, I strayed from my favorites and decided on Goma Tei with some friends. Having been in the Ward area for some earlier errands, I wanted ramen and I wanted something close by. Goma Tei was it!  They also have another location in Ala Moana Shopping Center on the bottom level by the food court. I prefer the Ward location just because parking is better and I think it's less busy. I'm all about conveniency!

So what's good here? For all the times I've come here, I've always had their specialty, Tan Tan ramen, a Japanese soup broth with spicy sesame flavor. Just remember that if you're not a spicy food fan like I am, then ask for "mild," or "no spice." There are various Tan Tan's that you can order, for example, the regular Tan Tan, Chashu Tan Tan, Wakame Tan Tan (with shoyu egg), Vegetable Tan Tan, Chicken Tan Tan etc. If you are looking for something other than Tan Tan, you can order the Shoyu Ramen, Wakame Shoyu Ramen, Chicken Shoyu, Tonkatsu Shoyu OR if you don't want ramen, try their Curry Rice, Katsu Curry Rice, Curry Noodle or Katsu Curry Noodle. Wow, so many choices!!!!! Plus, they have side orders of gyoza, 2 types of chicken dishes or shumai.

What I really missed on the menu was fried rice and Ramen with Menma (bamboo shoots). No menma?! How can!? This is strictly a ramen and meat kinda place, with the occasional Curry Rice combo. Don't come here hungry for fried rice though. You'll find no such thing on this menu.

My friends, Allen and Brian also ordered the Chicken Tatsutaage, which seemed like a regular fried chicken plate, but I've heard really good things about it. Didn't try it, since I'm not a big fried chicken kinda girl. Oh well! I did try the gyoza though, which was decent. I still prefer Rai Rai Ramen's gyoza.

I'll leave you with this though- A huge benefit of coming here? $2.89 Kirin Draft beer ALL DAY. How can you beat that?!

Yanagi Sushi

After winning a Women's Golf Tournament this past week, my good golf friend and eating buddy, David, took me out to celebrate! Of course he took me to eat sushi at Yanagi. I have never been there, so this was an extra-special treat. It was so great, David! Thank you again!!!

Besides the parking situation (only valet in the small parking lot or street parking on Kapiolani by Lexus Dealership), I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of different sushi and nigiri. There was definitely a bigger variety of fish I saw on the plate than at my usual favorite, Sushi King. David had to explain to me what fish was what, because I had never seen it before! Though I was very surprised to know that Yanagi is Korean-owned, I can still see why this may be a sushi favorite on Oahu. There were the regulars, Japanese families, Korean families, locals, and tourists trying their fare with sushi. While there is a sushi bar which sits around 12-15, there are tables and booths, though all in very tight quarters. Reminded me faintly of the old Tokkuri-Tei. Lots of small tables and booths very close to one another with lots of autographed pictures across the walls. A very home-y feeling!

As for the sushi and Nigiri, everything was so fresh and tasty. We ordered the Sashimi Deluxe plate and the Omakase (Chef's Special), plus a Dragon Roll and also Dynamite. The Dynamite was one of my favorites. I first had it at Imanas-Tei, but I think Yanagi's was really good. We even had 4 pieces of Toro on our Deluxe plate! The menu was extensive, and I wanted to try everything (especially the Miso Butterfish next time!)! I was drooling over an Enoki Mushroom dish that the table next to us had. But after scrolling through Yanagi on Yelp, I realized that most everyone orders a ton of sushi/Nigiri platters, and only some small cooked dishes. Now, I can definitely see why! Though it was pretty pricey, it was definitely worth it. I highly recommend Yanagi! By the end of the night, we were completely stuffed!

Yanagi is also similar to Sushi King and Tokkuri-Tei with their late night specials. David had said the price is right late at night. Too bad we were 2 hours too early! Next time!

Genius Lounge

I have been wanting to visit this store/restaurant for awhile, but you know me, it being located in Waikiki is a negative for me. Waikiki is always crowded, street parking is almost nonexistent, and if you park in a structure, expect to pay a high price. Also, since Waikiki is geared towards the tourists, restaurant prices are very high as well. So high price for food and parking = iffy for me, however I have been wanting to check this place out since it opened in mid 2010. Known for its cozy and romantic ambiance, interesting menu items and Genius Outfitters store below the restaurant, it seemed like a cool place to shop and chill out for Happy Hour (6-8pm).

Parking? Genius Lounge has a metered parking lot in the back of the restaurant, off of Kuhio. Look for the sign that says, "Paid Parking." I think 25 cents will get you only 10 minutes. Yep, that's Waikiki for you!

Verdict? Well, I absolutely loved the ambiance. Right on with the "cozy, romantic feeling," and I adored how there was outdoor seating. In Hawaii, you gotta love open-air restaurants! It gives a very casual and comfortable feeling, and you want to stay there all night....except you realize your parking meter is almost up!

Food? I wouldn't make the trip to Waikiki just for the food. It's a perfect spot for a date, or to relax with friends, but the food was just okay. We only tried about 3 (tapa/izakaya-sized) dishes, which ranged from $9-13. Pretty pricey I thought. I plan to try more dishes next time I make it there. I also plan to try their Green Tea Parfait, which they said took too long to make! I was appalled! So...I guess next time. Boo. Good drinks though- I thoroughly enjoyed my "Sensitive Richie" (a bunch of fruity juices with sake), and from 6-8pm, it was half off! Awesome!

I couldn't wait to put together an outfit around my new Bamboo Sky Acid Wash Jacket. I absolutely adore it! So what'd I pair it with? Of course my Bamboo Sky Mink Pink Inca Tube Skirt and my Mink Pink Rambo top! You could definitely say I'm a Bamboo Sky and Mink Pink girl at heart :P

Sushi King

After reading my food (and fashion) blog, you might be wondering what my favorite food is. 

SUSHI!!! 

My parents and I love to sit at the sushi bar at Sushi King for special occasions. We have our usual favorites: House Miso Soup, Agedashi Tofu, Robata Ika Geso, Robata Sweet Potato, Hamachi, Salmon, Ikura, Maguro, Toro, Unagi, Hokkigai, Tamago, UmeShiso, and of course, their Green Tea Ice Cream! They get their creamy Green Tea Ice Cream from Dreyers, which are only sold to restaurants. Boo!

Many others love going to Sushi King for their lunch (11am-230pm) or late night special (after 1030pm). A really great valued bento with lots of food to fill you up. Lunch is only $8.95 and you can choose from about 5 items + Teishoku (so it comes with side dishes, miso soup and California Roll, Cone Sushi (Inari) or Spicy Ahi Roll. Late night special is $9.95, and from 1030pm-midnight, you can also order their Chirashi Special for only $15.95!! 

Located on King Street next to Fukuya and Glazer's Coffee, their parking lot has lots of space. If not, you can also find street parking around there and around 4 King's Kitchen. Check it out!!
